Best birds of the week were...OWLS! A BOREAL OWL was discovered this morning Dec. 12th in Constance Bay west of Ottawa, at #146 Monty Dr. off Constance Bay Rd. It remained near the property for most of the morning. A GREAT GRAY OWL has also been present in the same vicinity for over 1 week, along a trail which runs off the end of Monty Dr. TWO GREAT GRAY OWLS and a NORTHERN HAWK OWL continue to hunt in Gatineau Park along ski trail #5 off trail #29. For more information about access and directions to the Gatineau site, please check the Dec. 6th transcript on the birding page of the OFNC's web site at http://www.ofnc.ca Two Snowy Owls were near Casselman east of Ottawa on Dec. 9th and one bird was seen in the same area on the 11th along Concession 20 east of the intersection with Ste-Rose. The female Red-bellied Woodpecker continues to visit the feeders at #6158 Rideau Valley Dr. approx. 5 km. south of Manotick. The bird comes daily and is most regular between 1:00 and 2:30 PM. To view the feeders it is necessary to enter the laneway and approach to farm house. Please be respectful of the residents and allow vehicles to pass. A female Black-backed Woodpecker was found today along the trail off Kerwin Rd. west of Kanata, opposite #881, near the 90 degree bend in the trail. A Carolina Wren has been coming to a feeder in Chelsea, Quebec at #40 Mill Rd. off Hwy 105, evidently since October. A Chukar, likely an escaped bird, was also seen here on the 10th and 11th. The homeowner welcomes birders onto the property. A male Barrow's Goldeneye was seen again on the Rideau River near the Rideau Tennis Club this afternoon with a few Common Goldeneye and Common Mergansers. Multiple reports of Bald Eagles have come in from various locations, including 4 at Constance Bay on Dec. 8th, one in the same area on the 12th and another at Petrie Island on the 12th as well. From the Carp area west of Ottawa this past week, several flocks of Wild Turkeys were reported including 93 birds in one day. Also there were 7 Gray Partridge at Kinburn Side Rd. between Hwy. 417 and Donald B. Munro, and 3 Lapland Longspurs among a flock of 160 Snow Buntings at a manure spread on Old Coach Rd.
