OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - DEC 06 2004 AT 9:00 AM

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

Winter weather has arrived in Ottawa-Gatineau, along with a few
interesting birds. Both a GREAT GRAY OWL and a NORTHERN HAWK OWL
are being seen regularly in Gatineau Park along the Pink Lake
trail, approx. 1.5 km northwest of the Relais Plein Air sports
centre at #397 Boul. de la Cite-des-Jeunes. The trail is now
closed to pedestrian traffic unless you are on skis or snow shoes.
There is also a $3.00 charge to park at the sports centre.

A female Red-bellied Woodpecker has been coming to a feeder south
of Manotick for at least 5 days and was seen yesterday December
5th. The address is 6158 Rideau Valley Dr. and the feeder is in
the front of the farm house but it is not easily viewable from the
road. Evidently the bird has usually been seen at the feeder
between 1:00 and 2:30 PM but also spends a lot of time in the
trees at the side of the house. Please request permission from
the residents to enter the laneway to view the feeder.

The Tufted Titmouse at 1676 Christina Cr. in Hallville was last
reported on November 30th, but is likely still coming to the
backyard feeders. It has usually been seen between 9:30 and 10:00
AM. Please stay on the east side of the property, near the pines.

On December 1st a very late Green Heron was in the same area as
the GREAT GRAY and NORTHERN HAWK OWLS, a late Dunlin was at the
east end of Andrew Haydon Park, and at least one adult Red-headed
Woodpecker was at the old burn area off Whistler Rd. in Constance
Bay. On the 3rd, a male Barrow's Goldeneye was seen from the
railway bridge on the east side of Lemieux Island and a male
Northern Pintail was on the river at the end of Scrivens Rd. On
the 5th, an adult Bald Eagle flew over Fallowfield Rd., American
Kestrels were reported from Chapel Hill in Orleans as well as Hunt
Club Rd. at Riverside Dr., and an adult male Snowy Owl was at the
"S-curve" of Earl Armstrong Rd. between Limebank and Bowesville
Rds.

In passerine reports, a Northern Shrike was at Dick Bell Park on
the 5th and Common Redpolls continue to be reported from a variety
of locations.

Thank you - Good Birding!
