Hi Everyone
Despite the winter conditions, birding was good today. This morning I
observed a 1st winter "Nelson's" Gull ( Herring X Glaucous Hybrid) at Andrew
Haydon Park. It was on the eastern pond in a flock of Herring and Ring-billed
Gulls. Along the shoreline of the Ottawa River at the eastern corner of AHP, a
Dunlin was feeding, my first December record for Ottawa. At least 2 adult
Red-headed Woodpeckers were still present yesterday, Nov.30 and one today at
the old burn site at Constance Bay.
                                                                good birding
                                                                Bruce

Around 9:30 this morning, December 2nd, exactly two months from the date the
bird was first observed, expert Michigan hummingbird bander Allen Chartier,
ably assisted by Cindy Cartwright, trapped the Sepasphorus hummingbird coming
to the backyard feeders at the home of Janice and Art Haines in Niagara Falls,
ON. The bird was measured and other data obtained that clearly confirmed the
identity to be a HY female Rufous Hummingbird.

The bird appeared within 10 minutes of the trap being set and she immediately
entered the caged feeder area. It took Allen about 12 minutes to complete the
banding and take photos, then Janice was allowed to release the bird. She flew
to the top of a nearby tree and within 15 minutes was back feeding, like
always, at two of the regular backyard feeders. Diane and I remained for about
45 minutes and observed the bird feeding three additional times.

Allen will be submitting some brief comments and related data to Ontbirds by
the end of the week, and before too long a more detailed written submission to
the OBRC. Interestingly, Allen told me he is banding another Selasphorus
hummingbird tomorrow morning in Indiana.

In my post earlier today, I stated that the this hummingbird has been observed
for two months.... I should have said exactly THREE months to the day, as the
bird first appeared on September 2nd.

The change in weather, Shrike nearby, possibly a Cooper's
nearby--whatever--between 0900 and 1200 not only did the Golden-crowned
Sparrow NOT appear at its "regular" feeding area on the south pathway, but
neither did any more than 3 Tree Sparrows, and no House Finches,
White-throated Sparrows, -------!!!!!! Indeed, very few Canada Geese flew
over--very unusual.
A number of us kept a lookout at the north pathway entrance-- alas, at 1100
2 PILEATED WOODPECKERS noisily came in, along with a FOX SPARROW.
4 Snow Geese flew several times over the wetland.

Close vigil was given to the south path -- NIL --- perhaps in the
afternoon.

Then at 1155 the entry to the north path off Hall's Rd. came alive with
several House Finches, Tree Sparrows and Juncos, AND among them was our
friend GOLDIE--- day 26 for the Golden-crowned Sparrow at Cranberry, albeit
at a diffferent locale.

>From the west exit 401 at Salem Rd. (in Ajax), south to Bayly, east through
LakeRidge to the first street (Hall's Rd.), south to the second (maybe the
first) parking area.
>From the east, exit 401 at Brock St., Whitby, south to Victoria, west to
Hall's Rd.
