Karen & I, along with visiting Jim Wojewodzki, had a great look at the
California Gull around 11 am from Sir Adam Beck power plant in Niagara
Falls, ON. It was on one of his usual rocks in the downstream corner of the
American side. The best part is that it was sharing the rock with an
Iceland Gull. Would have made a good photo - alas, no camera.
Other noteworthy (for us, anyway) birds of the day...
off Old Fort Niagara;
Red-throated Loon
Horned Grebe
White-winged Scoters
(didn't pick up Gordon's B. L. Kittiwake across the way over at the NOTL
gazebo although we were looking.)
in the gorge at the Falls;
a number of Common Loons
2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
a near breeding plumage Long-tailed Duck
and a superb 4 -5 minute aerial show by an adult Peregrine Falcon, outraged
at a Red-tailed Hawk who had the poor judgement to perch on a tree in the
gorge below the sidewalk by the funicular railway. Would have made great
video footage - alas, no video cam.
Running short of time, we had to forgo the upper rapids & beat a retreat to
the Peace Bridge. The only birds of note were 29 Tundra Swans about 1 mile
downstream from the Mackenzie's Crossing marker in Chippawa.
Happy Trails,
