The Selasphorus hummingbird in Niagara Falls made its first appearance this morning (November 23rd) a few minutes after 0700 hours. Homeowner Janice Haines told me she has added 2 additional feeders to the three already in her backyard.
Janice also told me her washing is piling up, the cupboards are getting bare (no time for shopping), her housecleaning is not getting done (except for a bit of vacuuming by husband Art), and she has not cooked many meals, asking Art to bring supper in on his way home from work. Art told me that in the past 10 days he has accumulated more "brownie points" than in any previous 10 week period. Directions: Take the QEW to the Thorold Stone Road exit in Niagara Falls. Now turn left (east) to Dorchester Road, then right (south) one block to Pettit Avenue. Take a left here and continue for about 1/2 km to Sherwood Road (directly across from First Baptist Church on the right hand side). Turn left and proceed one block to Peach Avenue to 4579, the second or third house on your right. The 12 birders there saw many common hawks, ducks & mergansers. Highlights were: RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER (1), Seen near the north end of the 8th Line NORTHERN SHRIKE (1), Seen near the Simcoe I. Road TUNDRA SWANS (~300), Estimated total seen in Sand Bay, Reeds Bay and Button Bay SNOW GEESE (~25), Seen near mouth of Button Bay CLIFF SWALLOW (1) (Late date for species) Seen over field on the 3rd Line before Big Sand Bay parking lot. Erwin Batalla and I stayed to follow the SWALLOW for about 10 minutes. We saw some chestnut brown on rump and head. Underparts were whitish on breast and belly and the throat and head were dark. (Possibility of a CAVE SWALLOW was dismissed as the SWALLOW lacked the CAVE'S light thoat & pale auriculars.) Bob Sachs, Kingston ON
