Next time you are at the CMRW platform ask me to show you recent superb close-up photos of the GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW and N.Shrike, taken by Kin Lau. Nov.10 was day 5 for the G-c Sp., first detected by John Floegel and photographed by Mike McEvoy. The bird is fairly skittish-- stay within the platform rails or near the table-- it will fly in every 12 to 30 minutes, sometimes perching within nearby dogwood shrubs. Indeed, today it was first seen down the path near the bend.
Today's raptor count was low-- south wind and a low Thermal Updraft Velocity-- 1 Sharp-shinned, 4 Red-tailed and 7 more Rough-legged Hawks (RL total to date is 272, 50 over the previous high --222 in 1991). 3 Cowbirds and 3 Fox Sparrows were noted, along with the N.Shrike. Exit 401 at Salem, south to Bayly, east through LakeRidge to the first street (Hall's Rd.), south down to the second roadside parking area. Doug Lockrey, coordinator CMRW
