Hi Everyone
The birding on Amherst Island was good today despite strong winds. The most
interesting observation was 2 Purple Sandpipers on the east end of the island
(KFN property). The "Owl Woods" had 8 Long-eared and one Northern Saw-whet Owl
and a late Blue-headed Vireo. Few hawks were observed, possibly due to the
windy conditions.

south end of the Lower Forty-Foot Road.
To reach the Owl Woods, turn left (east) at the four-way stop sign by the
general store and
drive 3.4 kilometres along Front Road to the (seasonal) Marshall Forty-Foot
Road. Marshall Forty-Foot Road is across the road from house #2320. Drive
along Marshall Road to the mid-way point, where there is an "S" in the road

Weather:
Today saw generally sunny skies with occasional cloudy periods,
particularly in the afternoon. Winds were moderate west-northwest in the
morning becoming moderate to strong in the afternoon, with frequent very
strong gusts.
Observations:
The flight was generally strong throughout the day with the volume and
flight line seeming to change with the wind intensity and subtle changes
in wind direction. Highlighting the day was the 11 Northern Goshawks
recorded including three adults. One has to wonder as to the severity of
the winter ahead when adult Goshawks start appearing in numbers this far
south, particularly when coupled with what appears to be an exceptional
Rough-leg year. Also of note was the 4 Ospreys tallied today, perhaps a
single day November record for the species at this site.
