Birded Amherst Island today. Visibility was low because of snow flurries, but we managed to see upwards of a dozen LONG-EARED OWLS in the Owl woods, GOLDENEYE, BUFFLEHEAD, COMMON MERGANSERS, AMERICAN WIGEONS, GADWALL and two TUNDRA SWANS off the shore of the east end of the island, and several ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and HARRIERS flying over open fields. SNOW BUNTINGS foraged off the road at the east end of the island, while a flock of four HORNED LARKS were on the road about half a kilometre west of the village of Stella. Although we didn't see any, we ran into another couple who had seen SNOWY OWLS in the fields behind the Owl woods.

DIRECTIONS: Amherst Island is accesible by ferry from the village of Millhaven (west of Kingston). The round trip costs $6 and it leaves for the island every hour on the half hour (returns every hour on the hour).
