October 11
This morning I found many dead waterbirds washed ashore along a short stretch
of beach (1km)
directly south of the harbour/marina in Kincardine on Lake Huron. There were at
least 10 Common
Loons, 3 Red-necked Grebes, 2 Red-breasted Mergansers, 1 Greater Scaup and
several cormorants and
gulls (Ring-billed/Herring). I found another dead Common Loon on the beach near
the town of
Southampton.

Considering I checked only a small length of this shoreline, it makes me wonder
if this is occurring
more extensively in this region.

In an Ontbirds posting about a week ago, Doug McCrae noted dead birds washing
up at Presqu'ile from
presumed botulism. I'd be curious to hear if anyone else has noted similar
observations lately (by
private email please, not to the general ontbirds list).
