Betsy, Jim Pawlicki, and I had 16 species of shorebirds at Rock Point today
(Sunday) including a juvenile Western Sandpiper picked out by Jim. We
estimated about 200 shorebirds including 2 Baird's, one White-rumped, four
Red Knots, and one Dunlin. Off Rock Point near Mohawk Island was a massive
feeding flock of Common Terns, estimated at 700 birds. Unfortunately, they
were too far to scrutinize and never came in to the park while we were
there. Rock Point Prov. Park is about 3 miles south of Dunnville on the
Lake Erie shoreline. At the Young Sod Farms on Reg. Rd. 65 at Poth Rd.
(Town of Dunnville), we had 59 Black-bellied Plovers and an adult Bald Eagle
overhead.

We also had a bird at Rock Point that may have been an adult Western
Sandpiper. It had the second-longest bill of any peep shorebird there (the
juv. Western took that honor). I took some photos and will do a little
research but I am interested in opinions on this bird if the digital photos
are decent. Please email if you would like to study the photos and give
comments (it may take a day before I can crop and edit them).

Good birding!
