An excellent viewing today at Pelee. Although the numbers were smaller than the big days in mid May the variety of birds was good. I added 4 birds to my life list today so I am quite thrilled.
Near the intersection of Tilden and C. Oak Trail we rounded the corner to see a SUMMER TANAGER, it was in company with a SCARLET TANAGER and I had them both in my binoculars at the same time. The Summer was in a change of feathers from immature to adult exactly as Peterson's shows. Further along the Oak Trail were Swainson's Thrush, 5 male Rose breasted Grosbeak were hanging around together and not flinching as we viewed them. The next jewel along the trail was a male HOODED WARBLER. This was the bird I wanted to find this year. It gave us a great show as we watched him about for about 30 minutes. We got to see the tail fanning behaviour as he hunted insects. He put on a great show and we got to approach him to about 30 feet or so. Other notables: Chestnut sided Warbler Nashville Black and White Yellow Black Throated Green Yellow Rumped Yellow Bellied Sapsucker Red Head Woodpecker Blue Headed Vireo Hillman Marsh Excellent views of the Willets. 29 counted by most. I counted 30 but I tend to exaggerated :) Also a Bald Eagle, Pectoral Sandpiper, Golden Plover. A fellow birder helped show me the difference between the Rough Winged Swallow and the imm. Tree. That made a 4th new bird on the day. Mark Conlon & Denise Bourgeois Lasalle, ON
