Tobermory raptors 04/29/04

Raptors seen:
Red-tailed Hawk 2
Red-shouldered 4
Broad-winged 391
Sharp-shinned 168
Cooper’s 3
Merlin 2
Peregrine 1
Northern Harrier 2
Osprey 1
TV 20

The wind was from the South until about 1230 hrs. by
1530 it was in the west.
Started with high cloud cover ended clear ski.
Count started at 1020 and ended at 1530. Counted 380
BW by 1230.
At 1020 there were 30 birds overhead. I am very sure
my numbers are low.
As a lot of the birds were passing directly over me at
tree top height, I started to photograph them. Have
some very good shots. This was my second trip up this
year. Without a south wind (South east, South west or
just South) the birds do not seem to try the island
hopping to the north shore. I have birded here on and
off for 12 years and this is the best I have ever
seen. I sacrificed my OFO hat to Georgian Bay 60KM
winds will do that. I’ll order a new one this
evening.
Directions:
Take Highway 6 to Tobermory. At the end of road is the
Ferry dock, which is a great, viewing place.

Well, after Marianne Reid and I had an excellent day of birding at Point
Pelee (including seeing a Henslow's Sparrow on the Woodland Trail), we also
found a Golden-winged Warbler. It was spotted around 4:00pm just south of
the park gates.

Good birding,
Jeremy Hatt
