Time Period: April 1st to mid-June, 2004 Volunteers are needed to help run a bird migration monitoring station at Tommy Thompson Park (Leslie Street Spit) on the Toronto lakeshore. The station is run as a joint project between Toronto Bird Observatory (TBO) and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA). In 2003 the station banded over 4000 landbirds.
Tommy Thompson Park is a prime migration corridor for birds passing through the Greater Toronto Area, and has often turned up several rare species. The Bird Research Station collects data in order to contribute to land-use planning and bird conservation initiatives. The banding station operates 7 days a week during the spring and fall season, for a period of 6-7 hours each day, and includes a daily 1-hour bird census. Volunteers are being sought to carry out one (or both) of the following activities: * Bird Census: Conduct a one-hour census of all birds heard and/or seen within a set route on the Spit. Skills required: Ability to identify by sight and by sound eastern North American bird species that can be found in Tommy Thompson Park (Leslie Street Spit). * Volunteer Field Assistant: Activities include: accurate documentation of data collected, mist-net extraction, banding, and helping out the Migration Monitoring Coordinator wherever necessary. Skills required: Previous banding or migration monitoring experience is helpful, but not required. Volunteers will be supervised and trained by permitted banders who will run the station. A good familiarity with eastern North American birds is also helpful. Volunteers are required to commit at least one day a week during the entire spring season.
