Before the Deep South of the province gets a lock on new Spring migrants, I thought I should report the American Woodcock on Barnes Road west of Presqu'ile Park today, February 27th. It was seen by Clive and Joy Goodwin as they were stopped at a level crossing for a freight train which flushed a woodcock which flew over the car and the train and landed in the mostly-frozen boggy woodland south of the tracks.
Barnes Road is a pleasant back way to Presqu'ile Park if you are approaching from the west. It runs south off Hwy.2 about 6km east of Colborne (Exit 497 from Hwy.401), then turns east to become Lakeshore Road which in 5km gets you to the entrance to Presqu'ile Park.
