Dear Ontbirders,
I looked at the photos. This bird is much more likely a Gambel's
White-crowned Sparrow (subspecies gambelii). This yellowish-billed race
breeds in extreme northwestern Ontario where it intergrades with the
nominate subspecies leucophrys (Godfrey 1986 and James 1991). Gambel's is a
rare but regular migrant (and in winter) in southern Ontario.
Happy birding,

To all,
Several people have seen a first winter WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW recently at the RBG's arboretum just out side
Dundas. The bird does have a yellow bill which could
suggest the bird is a PACIFIC WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW.
May well be the first record for Ontario. As you
drive in there is a wildlife center on your left, the
bird is feeding around here.
Look at the photograph on www.flythecat.com/james and
Judge for your self ??
