Hi everybody. Finding a Red-shouldered Hawk in Essex County anytime after
Christmas isn't easy, but at about 2:00 p.m. today my brother Robert and I
found a gorgeous adult at Little River in east Windsor. The bird was perched
in a sapling in one of the largely open areas just north of John's Pond -- a
rather unusual setting for this species. As we attempted to circle in front
of it so that we could get a better view, the bird flew off and continued
south (upstream) along Little River, giving us great looks in profile.
There are several Long-eared Owls in the area once again, but we had no luck
finding any today. There was a good mix of waterfowl on the open water of
Little River, including several Gadwall, and we also had a Winter Wren.
Little River can be accessed best from Little River Road, off Lauzon Road
(turn east) or by taking Riverdale south from Riverside Drive East.
