OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - FEB 08 2003 AT 8:00 PM

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

The Ottawa area is now in the doldrums of winter birding, with no
new species reported for several weeks. However, some good birds
can still be found just by getting out there.

Today, Feb. 8th, at least 6 adult Bald Eagles were seen together
on one hillside in the Lac Lablanche area north of Buckingham,
Quebec along Ch. Riviere Blanche just north of Mayo. Several
pairs of Common Ravens were engaged in courtship displays at this
same location. Also in the Lac Lablanche area today approx. 6
Pine Grosbeaks and 20 Evening Grosbeaks were at a feeder on Ch.
Roos off Ch. Burns, and more Evening Grosbeaks & many flocks of
Common Redpolls were in the general area.

At the Britannia Conservation area on the 8th, a Northern Goshawk
was seen at the entrance to the woods off Cassels Rd. Also on the
8th in the Dunrobin area, a Great Horned Owl was seen along Vances
Side Rd. At least one Short-eared Owl was seen along Earl
Armstrong Rd. on Feb. 2nd. A Northern Shrike and an American
Robin were on Henry Farm Drive in Nepean early last week.

Bohemian Waxwings remain very localized - a flock of approx. 50
were near Dunrobin on the 8th, but the majority continue to be
seen at Shirley's Bay near the Hilda Rd. feeder, where between 200
- 300 birds were seen on both Feb. 5th and 6th.

The farm at the corner of Frank Kenny & Regimbald Rds. was still
attractive to at least 100 Snow Buntings and at least 10 Lapland
Longspurs on the 8th.

Thank you - Good birding!
