Now that the brute force of winter is upon us I can guarantee a birding
enjoyment from your car window. A recent decision was made to return the
various feeding stations from the south to the north pathway roadside
entrance to Cranberry Marsh. Now then, when driving down Hall's Rd. from
Victoria St. in southwest Whitby, you may see any of Red-tailed Hawk,
N.Harrier, Kestrel, N.Shrike, Rough-legged Hawk (Jan. 10-perched in nearby
tree), W-t Deer, R-n Pheasant (visible or calling) ----, and when you get to
the feeders, park your car and sit and wait-- today there were up to 60
birds of 11 species on the pathway, feeders & in the trees and shrubbery.
Consider the following visitors over the past 2 weeks--- HOUSE FINCH, W-B
NUTHATCH, R-B NUTHATCH, SWAMP SP., SONG SP., TREE SP., ( possibly a Field
Sp.), BLUE JAY, CARDINAL, CHICKADEE, GOLDFINCH, JUNCO, GOLDEN-CROWNED
KINGLET, CROW, DOWNY WOODPECKER, HAIRY WOODPECKER, and Common Redpoll,
although the latter and Pine Siskins have been few and far between lately.
The feeders include a large patform, 2 hanging cylinders and a suet feeder
hanging over the roadway.
And, oh yes--lots of squirrels.

I may have missed some birds that others have spotted in the vicinity.

If any are interested in joining me on a bird-feeder tour of Pickering's
backroads, put this on your calendar-- 8:30AM on Sunday, Jan.18 at the
southwest corner of the Pickering GO Station parking lot, at Liverpool and
Bayly. We will be driving all morning-- bring a bag lunch and warm clothing.
