OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE   SUNDAY DECEMBER 28 AT 7 PM

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

The NORTHERN HAWK OWL and the BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK were still
present in the Almonte area as of December 28.

A Red-throated Loon, discovered on the 27th, was still present on
the morning of the 28th, east of the Britannia Filtration Plant
and a Common Loon was still lingering here along with 3 Bufflehead
and 1 Long-tailed Duck.

A Gyrfalcon was reported on the 27th from Lac Leamy, flying over
the Gatineau River, heading south towards the Ottawa River.

Single female Black-backed Woodpeckers were discovered in the
Larose Forest along the main road through the woods on the 27th,
as well as along the trail which runs northeast off Kerwin Rd
opposite house #881 on the 28th.  The male Red-bellied Woodpecker
and the Brown Thrasher were still coming to the feeders at 6848
McCordick Rd near North Gower on the 25th.

18 Wild Turkeys were seen on the 26th along Pakenham Concession 20
as well as 14 on Berry Side Rd north of Fifth Line Rd on the 28th.
Two Short-eared Owls were still present on Earl Armstrong Rd on
the 23rd.  A Long-eared Owl and a Northern Saw-whet Owl found in
the Clyde Ave woods on the 21st were searched for but not
subsequently seen.

In winter finch reports, the first sightings of White-winged
Crossbills come from the Larose forest.  12 were seen feeding here
on white spruce cones on the 27th.  Another flock was on Old Union
Hall Rd west of Almonte on the 28th.  Pine Grosbeaks were reported
twice this weekend, one was heard in the Larose Forest on the 27th
and 5 were feeding on red ash seeds along March Valley Rd on the
28th.

Among the numerous small flocks of Common Redpolls, a Hoary
Redpoll was found in Merrickville on the 24th, along with 4 Pine
Siskins.  Evening Grosbeaks are also widespread and being seen in
small numbers.

Birds that continue to be reported this winter include lingering
American Robins and Song Sparrows in a variety of locations and a
Winter Wren is still at the bridge along the bike path near
Deschenes in Québec.

Rough-legged Hawks and Northern Shrikes remain easy to find in
rural areas.

The Pakenham-Arnprior Christmas Bird Count was held December 26.
A preliminary total of 49 species was reported; highlights
included both Bald and Golden Eagles in the Bellamy Rd area near
Pakenham.
