OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE SATURDAY DECEMBER 20 AT 11:30 PM
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
Birds of note reported this past week included a Common Loon east
of the Britannia Filtration Plant on the 16, a Great Blue Heron
still at the South Merivale Business Park on December 19,
thousands of Canada Geese on the Rideau River at Manotick, a Wood
Duck still present at River Rain Park at the west of McArthur Ave
on the 20th, 1 male Long-tailed Duck and 1 male Bufflehead on the
Deschenes Rapids from the Britannia Yacht Club. A male Red-
breasted Merganser was still on the Rideau River south of the
tennis club on the 16th.
An adult Northern Goshawk was seen on the 20th at Route 500 and
County Rd 8 near Casselman. A Cooper's Hawk was at the Fletcher
Wildlife Garden the same day. An adult female Peregrine Falcon
was hunting pigeons along Merivale Rd near Woodward on the 17th.
A flock of 15 Wild Turkeys was spotted along highway 16 near
Bishop's Mills on the 17th and another flock of 23 birds has been
on Sixth Line Rd, west of Berry Side Rd, for at least the past
week.
The pair of Great Horned Owls is still present in the Britannia
Conservation Area as of the 20th. The first Snowy Owl of the
season was reported today, the 20th, near the S-curve of Earl
Armstrong Rd, along with 2 Short-eared Owls and a Barred Owl was
seen at the feeder on March Valley Rd near Riddell Rd on the 16th.
A Northern Hawk Owl has been in the Almonte area over the past
week, on Old Union Hall Rd. It was most recently reported on the
20th at the entrance to the Almonte sewage lagoons on County Rd
16, also known as Wolf Grove Rd.
A pair of Pileated Woodpeckers was very active on the 20th in the
Britannia Woods and a single American Robin was still at
Britannia, feeding on buckthorn berries at the entrance to the
woods, on the 20th as well.
A very late Winter Wren was foraging in the silver maple swamp at
the west end of the pedestrian bridge on the Québec side of
Deschenes on the 16th.
Two Cedar Waxwings were seen on Crescent St in Aylmer on the 16th
and a flock of at least 70 were on the South River Rd in Manotick
on the 19th.
Northern Shrikes and Common Redpolls continue to be reported from
a variety of locations. Lapland Longspurs were found with flocks
of Snow Buntings east of Ottawa along County Rd 8 as well as
Regimbald Rd and Sarsfield Rd east of Navan on the 20th.
The BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK east of Pakenham has relocated to
another feeder, approximately 3 km from the original location. It
was most recently seen at 339 Bellamy Rd on December 20. This
feeder is easily viewable from the road.
The Carleton Place Christmas Bird Count will be held on December
