Hello all, I observed the Northern Hawk Owl near Almonte today from 11:45 am to 1:00pm. When I arrived the bird was not visible but it flew in from the deciduous woods on the north side of the road, over the road and out in to the fields west of the barn at #283. The bird made one successful capture and flew immediately back across the road into the woods. It returned in a few minutes to hunt the fields again. It is possible that the owl cached the food in the woods. If so, then this would seem to indicate that the owl will stay in the area. However, this is just an educated guess as I did not see where it went in the woods. Of 12 perches selected while hunting only one was used more than once. That was the grouping of 3 cedars west of the barn and east of concession #6. It returned to these trees 3 times. Concession #6 is a good vantage point as the rolling topography can easily hide the owl.

Drive through the town to CR29 and continue west on Wolf Grove Road. After passing Almonte Sewage Lagoon on your right (an earlier location of a hawk-owl) turn right on Ramsay Con.8. Follow to Camelon Road and turn left. Follow Camelon to Ramsay Con.7 and then north on Con. 7 to Old Union Hall Road.
