Hi again Ontbirds people, Latest info re: American Three-toed Woodpeckers - a male was seen again this morning (Dec. 8) by Tom Hanrahan, near the same location where it was reported yesterday (the fallen tree past the leftward bend in the public trail off Kerwin Rd. The trail entrance is immediately opposite house #881 Kerwin)...And just to spice things up a bit...a FEMALE of the same species was also found this AM by Bob Cermak & Paul Mirsky, evidently much closer to the road, perhaps ~ 50 yards up the trail from the aforementioned entrance.
Additionally, a Hoary Redpoll was reported by Jeff Skevington (Dec. 6) with a flock of Common Redpolls, in a field near the south end of Vances Side Road between the communities of Dunrobin and Woodlawn, west of Ottawa. It never fails - I just get the Ottawa Bird Status Line summary updated, when something new & interesting shows up! DIRECTIONS: (Kerwin Rd.) - from Ottawa, take Hwy 417 west to the Eagleson/March Rd. exit (#138). Go north on March Rd. and follow this until Dunrobin Rd (a T-intersection with traffic lights). Turn right onto Dunrobin Rd. and look for Kerwin Rd. on your right. Go right on Kerwin and cross the railroad tracks. The public trail comes up shortly on your right, immediately opposite house # 881. Take care when you park along the shoulder, as the ditches are deep. (Vances Side Rd.) - follow above directions until Dunrobin Rd. Continue west along the Dunrobin Rd., through the village of Dunrobin. Vances Side Rd. runs north-south, between Dunrobin Rd. & Stonecrest Rd. The GPS coordinates provided by Jeff Skevington are as follows: 452536 N, 760420 W ( I cannot vouch for these coordinates, though I am sure Jeff is accurate. Personally, I am a dinosaur who relies on old-fashioned road maps). Good winter birding!
