OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 8 AT 8:30 AM
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
Reports from the past week were typical for the season. Two
Horned Grebes were on the Ottawa River at Shirley's Bay on the 5th
along with large numbers of Double-crested Cormorants. On October
1, 5 Brant were seen just off shore at Andrew Hayden Park and a
Snow Goose was in the fields with numerous Canada Geese at
Merivale and Fallowfield Rds.
Single Red-breasted Mergansers were found at Shirley's Bay on the
1st and at Andrew Hayden Park east on the 5th. 25 American Wigeon,
small numbers of Gadwall, Ring-necked Ducks and Hooded Merganser
were at Britannia and a few Common Goldeneye are beginning to
appear on the river.
Three Bonaparte's Gulls flew over Deschenes Rapids on October 5.
Water levels were way up at Shirley's Bay last weekend with no
remaining mudflats. Only a single Spotted Sandpiper was here on
the 5th.
The woods at both Britannia and Shirley's Bay hosted good numbers
of American Robins and Hermit Thrushes on the weekend. A Gray-
cheeked Thrush was reported east of Ottawa south of Russell in the
wood near an old quarry on the 4th.
A lingering Brown Thrasher was still in the parking lot shrubs at
Shirley's Bay on the 5th. A significant increase in both Ruby-
crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglets was noted in several
locations.
Blue-headed Vireos and seven species of warblers were found,
mainly at Shirley's Bay, as well as at the King Mountain and
Champlain trails in Gatineau Park. Species included numerous
Yellow-rumps as well as a few late migrants such as Nashvilles,
Northern Parula, Magnolia, Black-throated Blue, Black-throated
Green and Palm.
A NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW discovered in the shoreline
vegetation between Andrew Hayden Park and Lakeside Gardens on the
6th may still be present as this is ideal habitat for this species
during migration.
Many Song Sparrows, White-throated Sparrows and a few Swamp
Sparrows are still present. At least 2 White-crowned Sparrows
were at Britannia on the 5th and Dark-eyed Juncos are beginning to
move through. Three Rusty Blackbirds were seen at Shirley's Bay,
also on the 5th.
There have been no further reports of the AMERICAN AVOCET at the
Winchester sewage lagoons since the morning of September 29th and
no sign of the PURPLE GALLINULE at Shirley's Bay since the 28th.
The OFNC annual Fall Bird Count will be held on Saturday October
18 and Sunday October 19. To participate on the Ontario side,
please contact Eve Ticknor at 737-7551 or e-mail
[EMAIL PROTECTED] For the Québec side, please contact Daniel St
