Forwarding for Mike Morgante. Athols Springs is perhaps 10 miles south =
of the Peace Bridge and, as Mike says, across Lake Erie from Waverly =
Beach where I and others saw at least one Black-capped Petrel on =
Tuesday.

Subject: [GeneseeBirds-L] probable petrels on Lake Erie
With moderate-to-strong winds from SW and West all day on Lake Erie, I =
thought it might be good day to look for remaining hurricane birds. I =
scoped from Hoak's Restaurant parking lot in Athol Springs (Hamburg) =
from 5-6:15 p.m. =20
At a very great distance, I kept seeing a pair of birds working back and =
forth, just over the water. Based on shape, size, flight style, and my =
previous experience (limited to Hurricane Fran in 1996), I strongly =
feel that they were petrels. I could not make out any color as i could =
barely even make out the birds. They were just too far away to say =
anything conclusively. I watched gulls at the same distance (on the =
horizon, likely several miles out) and I am confident that these two =
birds were not gulls. At one time, i thought there might be 3 =
individuals, but i routinely watched two birds working together for most =
of the hour.
Athols Springs is nearly opposite of Waverly Beach in Ontario where =
several Black-capped Petrels were seen from shore on Tuesday. =20
I walked a small stretch of Woodlawn Beach and did not find anything =
notable.
