At 9:50pm, Thursday, September 11th, 2003, this is the Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report. The Hotline is normally revised on Thursday, unless an unusual bird turns up in the Hamilton area.
The Bird Study Group resumes this Monday, September 15th. The location is still Shaklee Canada, 952 Century Drive, Burlington, and the start time remains 7:30pm (socializing begins at 7:00pm). This month's topics include 'What to Look for in September and October', and a 'History of the Hamilton Area Fall Bird Count'. Last but certainly not least, Bob Curry will lend his insights into Thrush identification. Now onto the birds... The bird of the week has to be a three way tie between the WESTERN SANDPIPER found at the Grimsby Sewage Lagoons, the BLACK VULTURE seen over the Townsend Sewage Lagoons and the AMERICAN AVOCET spotted today near Guelph. The WESTERN SANDPIPER was last reported on Tuesday and the BLACK VULTURE was heading northeast. The AMERICAN AVOCET is probably still around. It was in a small pond across from a dairy farm south of Guelph earlier today. Direction are as follows: take the 401 and exit at Highway 6 North, at the first lights turn left and proceed to County Road 35. Turn left (south) on County Road 35 and travel 1km (the bird was on the east side of the road). Other local reports this week include PINE WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, and BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO at the Waterdown North Wetland Trails, PINE WARBLER, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, GREEN HERON, and COMMON NIGHTHAWK at Courtcliff Park, PARASITIC JAEGER, POMARINE JAEGER, SABINE'S GULL, BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, and PEREGRINE FALCON at Van Wagner's Beach, plus BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER at Pier 26. Out of town at trip to Long Point to look for warblers turned into a mini-hawkwatch at the Old Cut Banding Station. The tally for the day was 10 BALD EAGLES, 240 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 3 MERLINS, 12 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 10 COOPER'S HAWKS, 2 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 8 AMERICAN KESTRELS, and numerous RED-TAILED HAWKS and TURKEY VULTURES.
