This morning (Sat. Aug. 23) at 10:30 am, Barb Charlton and myself had an adult Long-tailed Jaeger off Van Wagners Beach in Hamilton. The bird flew from Lake Ontario inland over the Beachstrip and out of sight. The winds were northerly, not ideal for this site, but the passage of the cold front yesterday associated with a low pressure system over James Bay seemed like a good bet for the first jaegers of the season.
Directions: From the QEW in Hamilton, take the Centennial Parkway exit, go north to the North Service Rd, turn left, follow this to Van Wagners Blvd., and pull into the parking lots at Van Wagners Beach near Hutch's Restaurant. Best conditions for fall pelagics at this site are east or northeast winds. Rob Dobos Dundas, Ont.
