The water level in the middle pond of the Harrow Sewage Lagoons is down and
offering some shorebird habitat. The following were observed between 8:00
a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 23rd:
Lesser Yellowlegs - 61
Greater Yellowlegs - 5
Stilt Sandpiper - 6
Pectoral Sandpiper - 4
Spotted Sandpiper - 4
Long-billed Dowitcher - 2
Sanderling - 1

Also 1 male Harrier, and 6 juvenile Bobolinks.

The Harrow Sewage Lagoons are on Concession Road 3 north of the Town of
Harrow. The ponds are also more accessible. The gate is open, the fence we
used to have to crawl through is gone, and if you have a high clearance
vehicle you can drive right up to the second pond.

At the Essex-Windsor Regional Landfill in an area where they are excavating
cover soil, there were 19 Killdeers and 9 Least Sandpipers. Elsewhere on the
site were Song, Field, Savanna and Grasshopper Sparrows, a dozen
Meadowlarks, 2 Eastern Kingbirds and a Yellow-billed Cuckoo. The Landfill is
5 kilometres west of County Road 23 on County Road 18, south of the Town of
Essex. The landfill is open on Saturdays from 8 to 2, and does not have a
lot of traffic. While it is generally not open to the public, if you are
interested in driving around just stop at the scale house and mention my
name. I happen to know the boss.
