Birders The following event came to my attention courtesy of Pierre Arnold of the Hamilton Naturalists' Club.
Marcy's Woods west of Fort Erie on Lake Erie is unique. It is arguably the largest and probably best remaining piece of forested Carolinian habitat in Ontario. I don't have details in front of me but it provides successful breeding habitat for significant Ontario birds including Hooded Warbler and Acadian Flycatcher. Thanks to the Bert Miller Nature Club of Fort Erie it has been on the conservationist radar for around a decade. All the same it's fate continues to be up in the air. This place needs long term protection. In an effort to raise awareness, the Bert Miller Nature Club has prepared a petition to be submitted to the Ontario Legislature next Monday afternoon. They are planning to deliver their petition with as much fanfare as possible. The idea is to deliver it directly from Marcy's Woods to Queen's Park via war canoe. The canoes leave Fort Erie Friday August 22 and make stops at a number of locations enroute before portaging up University Avenue in Toronto Monday afternoon August 25. This may sound extravagant but publicity - any publicity can only help this important cause. The organizers are asking anyone who can (and that should include birders) to meet this flotilla on its route to Toronto and show some support. Details can be viewed at http://www.bertmillernatureclub.org/canoetrip.htm Thank you for your indulgence.
