The Buff-breasted Sandpiper was still at the sod farm on Sylvan Glen Road
north of Port Hope at least until 9.30 am this morning, August 19th. It was
mainly on the first strip of sod left in the second field north of county
Road 74 on the east side of the road. I had excellent views through my scope
at this life bird, thanks Jean and Ron and the other reporters!

About 200 metres east of Sylvan Glen a narrow gravel road which is a dead
end, Hawkins Road, runs north from Dale Road along the eastern edge of the
sod farm. From this road I could see the bird much better since the sun was
then at my back and the bird was closer to this road. Horned Larks, and
Killdeer were there too

Directions: From Hwy 401 take the Welcome/Port Hope exit, Exit 461, and go
north on Hwy.2 to the first traffic lights. Turn east on Dale Road, County
Road 74, for about 1.5 km and turn north on Sylvan Glen Road.
(Coming from Presqu'ile, Jean and Ron used Exit 464 and came north on County
Road 28 to Dale Road, then west to Sylvan Glen).

I stopped at Nonquon sewage lagoons too for a quick visit. The most
interesting shore bird was the Baird's Sandpiper in the far west pond where
the water was quite low and there were many shorebirds (usual suspects)
Caspian Terns and Bonaparte Gulls and Black Terns.

Directions (from Geoff Carpentier's posting 7/13/03)

Don't forget you need a permit to enter the lagoons.

The permits may be purchased at the Durham Region Transfer Site located at
1623 Reach Rd, Port Perry during the following business hours .... Tuesday,
Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Thursday from
8:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. To get to the transfer station, travel north on Hwy 12
past Port Perry [Hwy 7A] to the next traffic lights [Regional Road 8 = Reach
Rd.] and travel east to #1623 on the north side of the road.

The lagoons are located one road north of the transfer site east off Hwy 12
on Concession Rd. 8 [don't get confused as, despite the fact that these
roads are both numbered "8", they are two different roads - one is a
regional paved road, the other a dirt concession road].
