Hi Ont Birders,
Yesterday, July 19th, while doing an early morning check at the eastern
sewage lagoons, I observed 12 species of shorebirds. Highlights included
one adult Short-billed Dowitcher at Alfred, one breeding plumage Stilt
Sandpiper and a juvenile Lesser Yellowlegs at High Falls Conservation
Area. Overall, numbers were low, due to a lack of habitat, except at
High Falls where 58 Lesser Yellowlegs were present. A couple of lagoons
had recently fledged Wilson's Phalarope. Other birds of interest were a
family of Gray Partridge 9 young, near Alfred, Sora and Virginia Rails
calling at Alfred and Casselman. Many sparrows were still vocal
including Grasshopper sparrows along Peat Moss Road near Alfred and
Clay-colored Sparrows at Riceville. The stronghold for Ruddy Ducks in
Eastern Ontario continues to be Alfred sewage lagoon, where a total of
63 Ruddy Ducks were counted including 3 broods of 4, 7 and 9 downy
young. At Casselman sewage lagoon, 21 Ruddy Ducks were observed, with no
young seen at this point.
Later in the day I birded the Ottawa River between Andrew Hayden Park
and Shirley's Bay. Due to high water levels, Shirley's Bay had no
habitat and Andrew Hayden Park had a small sandbar, but no shorebirds
were present. If you require directions to any of these areas
mentioned, please email me privately.
