While everything else seems to be going north, the last three weekends I have seen 1 or 2 Commons Loons flying high and hard due south! Today one went over calling loudly. Likewise, the last two weekends I have seen 1 or 2 Bank Swallows doing the same thing but at lower altitudes [<500 feet].
Realizing that some loons summer on the Great Lakes, I wonder if the loons are simply trying out the flight north and then deciding to return to the lake??? Likewise, what are the Bank Swallows doing? .. .there are no colonies close to my home [several kms either direction] so are they just foraging widely or are they perhaps still wandering looking for a home? Nice yard bird tho!
