Report for May 26, 2003 (Monday):

With only a handful of birders in the park there are very few reports,
today. Even so, it is apparent that most of the warblers that were
present yesterday have departed. Warbler reports include single
Black-throated Blue, Yellow-rumped and Cape May. Hundreds of Cedar
Waxwings are putting on a great show in the tip woods. Also in the tip
woods were Black-billed Cuckoo and Philadelphia Vireo. At 11:00 a.m. a
Sandhill Crane flew to the tip and then back inland, all the while
bugling its presence. Three Common Loons in basic plumage and 3 Caspian
Terns provided some excitement. Baltimore Orioles, Yellow Warblers,
Eastern Kingbirds and Warbling Vireos are easily seen gathering nest
material and building nests.

Keep visiting Pelee, since spring migrants will continue to pass through
in numbers until the second week of June. Pelee hosts an unusual mix of
breeding birds, some in good numbers so continue your visits through
June. Pelee specialty breeding birds includes large numbers of Blue-gray
Gnatcatcher, Eastern Towhee and Orchard Oriole. Yellow-billed Cuckoos are
easily heard and found in June. At least one pair of White-eyed Vireo and
several pairs of Yellow-breasted Chat are thought to be breeding in the
park this year.

This is the last report of the Point Pelee "Festival of Birds” birding
program for Spring 2003. We hope that you have enjoyed these
postings.
