Point Pelee Report -- May 22, 2003 (Thursday) Once more, birders awoke to moderate northeast winds and few migrants. Fortunately it is a bit warmer than the past couple of days. Although large numbers of birds are not present, there is nonetheless a good variety of species throughout the park. These include warblers such as Blackpoll, Blackburnian, Mourning, Wilson's, Canada, Magnolia, Chestnut-sided, etc.
Overall the migration has been delayed by the continuing east winds and cool temperatures; even many breeding birds have yet to return to Point Pelee, as such species as Indigo Bunting, American Redstart, Orchard Oriole, both cuckoos, Eastern Wood-Pewee are present in low numbers only and very few are singing. There are still many migrants yet to arrive at Point Pelee and southern Ontario, so expect some good migration days in late May and even early June. In years past, some very heavy fall-outs have occurred during the first week of June -- when almost all birders have left the area! Highights reported this morning include: Peregrine Falcon - flying over the Tip Connecticut Warbler -- west side of Woodland Nature Trail, a bit south of the Visitor Centre Prothonotary Warbler -- Woodland Nature Trail, between posts #6 and #7. Update on yesterday's sightings (May 21): Red Knot (25) -- NW Hillman Marsh Semipalmated Plover (170) -- NW Hillman Marsh Clay-colored Sparrow -- DeLaurier Parking Area Glaucous Gull (immature) -- Tip POINT PELEE BIRD PHOTOS: The next issue of *Point Pelee Natural History News* will be partially devoted to bird photographs, since many interesting species were captured on film this spring (March to May inclusive).
