Report for May 19, 2003 (Monday):

Despite the continuing east winds, bird activity seems to have picked up a bit
this morning at Rondeau. For example, there is a distict increase in the
number of birds that are singing. With the upcoming change in the weather
(Tuesday and/or Wednesday), there should be a new flood of migrants.

Today’s highlights include the following:

BLUE GROSBEAK -- The female bird is again present on South Point Trail – take
Lakeshore Road south to where it ends, walk about 1 km south until you reach
the beach. There are two different benches on the beach – although the bird
was initially around the first bench, it now tends to be closer to the second
(further) bench. The bird habitually feeds in the tall dune grasses.

PROTHONOTARY WARBLER – a co-operative male is present along the start of
Spicebush Trail and the west end of Bennett Road. It often spends its time on
the railings on the boardwalk, providing exceptional views. Each morning there
has been an Eastern Screech-Owl perched in the open at the junction of Bennett
Road and Rondeau Road (start of Spicebush Trail).

WHIMBREL – late yesterday two birds were observed just outside the park gate
along the beach, a first observation for the season.
