On Monday, the 24th there was a pair of E. Bluebirds at the intersection of High Rd. and Earl Armstrong Road (High is off Albion Rd. in Ottawa's south end, S. of the airport) A single Snow Goose was flying with a large flock of Canada's over the airport heading East. One Male Northern Harrier was over the fields at Leitrim and Bowesville Roads.
I went to scout out the spring flooding area east of Bourget as well. There were a few Geese moving around, but all of the roads are still driveable, including Johnston Road and the road from Pendleton to Ettyville. There was very liittle standing water. The Cobbs Lake Creek is still 3 feet below the banks. And only one raptor was in the area, a Red-tailed Hawk.
Along Frank Kenny Road, south of Navan, I couldn't locate any Sandhill Cranes, but there were many flooded fields. More than 3000 Canada Geese were distributed in them with a few Mallards and Black Ducks.
DIRECTIONS: Frank Kenny Road can be reached by travelling East on the 417 to exit 96. Go North to the stop sign in Carlsbad Springs, right on Russell Road and travel a few Kms. and turn left on Frank Kenny Road. To reach the Bourget flooded area, continue travelling on the Russell Road east, a few kms. past the village of Bourget to Johnston Road. (More detailed instructions can be found on the Ottawa Field Naturalists website at http://home.achilles.net/ofnc/birding/wheretogo/index.html )
