There was no open water other than along the ferry path where we saw
Mallards and C. MERGANSERS. We cruised the western area from the 5th Line to
the 8th Line on Mar. 14. Eleanor noticed a large lump in a tree about ½ km
west of hwy 95 halfway between Baseline and Reeds Bay Roads. On scoping, it
proved to be a large (female?) GREAT HORNED OWL. Eleanor also spotted our
only SNOWY OWL of the day. It was on a tree ¼ km. south of Reeds Bay Rd.,
about halfway between hwy 95 and the 5th Line. Other sightings included 3
WILD TURKEY near the Button Bay Lane, about 500 SNOW BUNTINGS in two large
flocks and HORNED LARKS were everywhere mostly in small groups of 2 to 8 but
some flocks of over 30 were also seen. CROWS were much less plentiful than
expected in mid March, though we did see one flock of 20. No sign yet of
RED-WNGED BLACKBIRDS or KILLDEERS. Eleanor noticed a large EUROPEAN HARE as
we were going north on the 8th Line between Bennetts Rd. and Reeds Bay Rd.
