A perky Savannah Sparrow was discovered yesterday, February 27, feeding among the Mallards at the edge of the Cobourg harbour parking lot and was seen again this morning. There is a resident flock of House Sparrows and at least one Song Sparrow but the Savannah had not been seen before yesterday, though it must be a wintering bird.
The ice in the harbour is very variable depending on temperature and wind direction. When there is open water there has been a good selection of waterfowl inside the harbour including both scaup, Redhead, Long-tailed Duck, Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, and up to 12 White-winged Scoters. Three adult Iceland Gulls were present earlier in the week, with several Glaucous and the occasional Thayer's and Lesser Black-backed. To reach Cobourg harbour exit Hwy.401 at Division Street, exit 474 and go south to the harbour. To reach the main parking lot, turn west at the traffic lights at Albert Street just before the harbour then turn south on either Third Street or Hibernia. The bird is feeding on the snow among the ducks between the parking lot and the harbour. Margaret Bain [EMAIL PROTECTED] "Margaret Bain" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
