In addition to the RED-NECKED GREBE which continues to be reported in
the
Otonabee River along Cty Rd.32 south of Lakefield ( about 10km north and
east
of Peterborough), the Kawartha Lakes also has a wintering COMMON LOON in

winter plumage. It can be seen at close range ( not always possible for
loons) diving
regularly in the Bobcaygeon River.
Directions: Enter Bobcaygeon ( about 34 kms north and east of Lindsay),
go over
the Trent Canal Bridge (Hwy 36) and make a sharp left turn on to Anne
Street
which in .3kms takes you to the river . The LOON is often seen around
Gordon's
Yacht Works on Front St.

In the cold of last weekend two sightings were of interest. On Cty. Rd.
42 ( BaselineRd.)
along the east side of Shadow Lake, some 7 kms out of Coboconk, I came
across a
flock of 15 SNOW BUNTINGS that were cold enough that they remained
motionless
( something unusual for them) in a large oak tree basking in the morning
sun. In fact when
I drove on, they were still there, providing great close-up views.
Closer to home about
7 kms north of Bobcaygeon, I came across a pair of AMERICAN ROBINS
bathing
themselves in an open spring fed creek in -25 degree weather..proving
once again the
importance of water to our birds year round.
