OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE MONDAY FEBRUARY 17 AT 6 PM
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
Continuing frigid temperatures and lack of birds made for another
quiet birding week in the Ottawa area.
The most reports were of a Barred Owl, basking in the sun in plain
view, along the Rideau River, south of the Rideau Tennis Club, at
the end of Prindiville St which is a short, dead end street off
North River Rd, a female Northern Flicker which has come to a
feeder on Smith Rd in Oxford Station three times since February 1,
most recently on the 15th, and a Carolina Wren which briefly
visited a window sill on Gatineau View Cres in Gloucester on the
15th as well.
The female HARLEQUIN DUCK and male Wood Duck are still on the
Rideau River in a very reduced area of open water between
Strathcona Park and the tennis club. The female Northern Pintail
on the Rideau in Manotick was last reported on the 9th.
In other reports, the Trail Rd landfill hosted no gulls whatsoever
on the afternoon of the 15th but there were 2 Red-tailed Hawks, a
small number of Horned Larks, about 20 Snow Buntings in the dump
and a flock of approximately 50 American Tree Sparrows along Trail
Rd.
On both the 15th and 16th, a Sharp-shinned and Cooper's Hawks were
seen at the south end of Mud Lake in Britannia. Cooper's Hawks
were also spotted on the 16th on the Champlain Bridge and at
Brown's Inlet off the Rideau Canal. A Snowy Owl was seen again at
Greenbank Rd north of Fallowfield on the 13th and another was seen
on the 9th in Casselman on Concession 20 off exit 138.
Thanks to all who continue to report during these lean, mean
times.
Good birding.
