A trip to the 1000 Islands today resulted in sightings of 11 eagles, the
majority adults. A couple were seen from Ivy Lea, along the 1000 Islands
Parkway west of the bridge. Best viewing opportunity was from the south
side of the1000 Islands bridge on Hill Island. You can't walk onto the
bridge but there is a viewing platform along the water beneath the bridge,
accessible by walking down the hill. Eight were seen from this location. A
thorough check could possibly turn up 20 birds because the river is well
frozen except for the area within a mile or two upriver and they are nicely
concentrated.

A check of the waterfront at Cardinal failed to turn up the immature male
King Eider seen on Sunday.

this note is from Bud Andress.

On Monday, February 10th, I observed the highest single eagle count from
the Canadian Span of the 1000 Islands Bridge yet to date (27). The cold
weather has caused extensive stretches of the river to be frozen so the
eagles are congregating in the open water in the Ivy Lea vicinity.

As noted in the previous e-mail, cross the bridge and park on Hill
Island. View the birds from the platform along the water's edge beneath
the bridge. The first set of stairs are snow-covered so it
might be easier descending the bank. They will be both in the air and
perched in the pines along the shore. Don't stop on the bridge.
