FOR THE BIRDS, Canada’s first-ever Birding Eco Tourism Conference, will be held February 27, 28 and March 1 at White Point Beach Resort on the Lighthouse Route of Nova Scotia. Although the conference, according to organizer Lynne Perry, Executive Director of the South Shore Tourism Association, is the first of its kind in Canada, it is no accident that is happening in Nova Scotia.. "Birding is the fasted growing outdoor leisure activity in North America," says Perry, who is also and birder, "and Nova Scotia is home to some of the best spots for seabird and shorebird watching on the continent - especially in winter and during migrations." Conference delegates will also attend a full day session of the Brant Winter Birding Festival, taking place in nearby Cape Sable Island and featuring Canada’s most recently named IBA (Important Birding Area).

The Conference is designed for birders, tourism operators and others interested in and committed to sustainable community development. The South Shore Tourism Association has put together an impressive array of speakers for the conference, including: Linda Campbell (Community Involvement in Birding Development), Nature Tourism Coordinator for Texas Parks and Wildlife Dep’t and architect of one of the most successful public birding trails in the world; Harry Delong (Sustainable Tourism Development), Superintendent of Kejimkujik National Park & National Historic Site of Canada and Kejimkujik Seaside Adjunct National Park; Tom Hince, (Birder Impacts ... lessons from Canada's most popular birding destination - Point Pelee), author, Discovery Channel guest, birder and tourism operator; Cathy MacDonald (Birding as a Tourism Product) ,Tourism Development Officer, Nova Scotia Tourism & Culture; Laurel Bernard (Birding Habitat), Stewardship Coordinator, Nature Conservancy of Canada; Leif Helmer (The Importance of Wilderness), Protected Areas Coordinator, Tobeatic Wilderness Area; Nova Scotia Department of Environment & Labour; Ted D'Eon (Re-establishment of the Roseate Tern) award winning naturalist & birder from West Pubnico, Nova Scotia.

In addition to the intensive presentations, workshops and panels, FOR THE BIRDS will also include delegate receptions, networking opportunities, silent auction (fund raiser for Cape Sable Island Important Bird Area Centre), as well as two of Nova Scotia’s famous hospitality treats, Lobster Dinner and Planked Salmon Supper.

A Birding Eco Tourism Trade Show will take place at White Point coinciding with the Conference, featuring goods and services designed to appeal to Conference attendees. Full delegates to FOR THE BIRDS will receive free trade show space as part of their registration. "Show us all what your area has to offer," says Diane Smith, Conference Co-ordinator.

White Point Beach Resort, one of the industry partners in the Conference, is providing all accommodations, meals and transportation for delegates. Delegate reservations for the conference can be made at 800-565-5068 and conference schedules, speakers’ information and news alerts can be found at: www.ForTheBirdsNovaScotia.com.
