THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE at 8:30 PM on Sunday February 2nd, 2003.
This is Chris Lewis reporting. An adult RED-SHOULDERED HAWK has
been seen almost daily in Britannia since January 25th, last seen
on the 31st and most often observed at Don and Poulin Streets. It
has also been seen in the Britannia Conservation Area and is
usually being pursued by American Crows. This is only the second
January record of this species in Ottawa since 1976.
A Northern Flicker is also still in Britannia, at the southwest
corner of Mud Lake, most recently reported on January 30th. Also
on the 30th a Barred Owl was found on the Jack Pine Trail at
around 10:00 AM, just west of where the trail divides into the
long and short loops. A Cooper's Hawk was in the Carlingwood area
the same afternoon.
Today, Feb. 2nd, 12 Gray Partridges and a Northern Shrike were in
the fields on the north side of Colonnade Road opposite the
business park.
An immature female Northern Goshawk was hunting at the Hilda Rd.
feeder near Shirley's Bay on the 27th, but there have been no
reports of the Field Sparrow at this feeder since the 20th.
On the 28th, the Carolina Wren returned after a long absence to
868 Acadian Gardens in Orleans.
A visit to the Eardley escarpment in Quebec on the 26th produced 2
Bald Eagles at the intersection of Bradley and Eardley-Masham
Roads, and another 2 in different plumages farther along the road
in the Gatineau Park. There were no finches found in the park
that day. However, today the 2nd approx. 50 White-winged
Crossbills, 30 American Goldfinches, a small number of Purple
Finches and 1 Golden-crowned Kinglet were found in the Lac
Lablanche area north of Mayo, Quebec.
A Snowy Owl and a few Horned Larks were seen on Rushmore Road at
Eagleson Road today, and a few American Robins are still lingering
- at least 50 were seen along Rifle Road near Shirley's Bay on the
25th as well as smaller numbers along Timm Drive in Kanata the
same day and along the Jack Pine Trail on the 30th.
There have been NO reports of the female HARLEQUIN DUCK at the
Rideau Tennis Club since January 14. There has been very little
open water and very few birds on the Rideau River for the past 2 -
3 weeks due to the extremely cold weather. Any future sightings
of this and other interesting birds would be appreciated for the
Status Line.
Thank you - Good birding!
