COOPER'S HAWK, 30 HORNED LARKS, 15 AMERICAN ROBINS on County Road 7 and a NORTHERN FLICKER along the Babylon Road. January 21/03 Amherst Island Ken Kingdon and I birded Amherst Island and observed 4 SNOWY OWLS on the eastern half of the island, 2 BALD EAGLES on the southwest portion of the island and many ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, RED-TAILED HAWKS, AMERICAN KESTRELS and 1 NORTHERN HARRIER seen mostly on the eastern half of the island. A lone SONG SPARROW was seen on the side of the road. Many RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS were seen in the little amount of open water along the south shore at the east end. We snow-shoed into the Owl Woods and found 5 LONG-EARED OWLS in the Jack Pine Forest and 1 SAW-WHET OWL in a red cedar just north of the Jack Pine Forest on the south side of the main trail. The LONG-EARED OWLS were at the entrance of the Jack Pine Forest so instead searching the woods for more owls, we decided to walk away and not flush the owls on such a cold day. Two good, but cold days of birding with 43 species. The VARIED THRUSH can be found at Civic Address # 383 Prinyer's Cove Crescent which is quite far along this road from #7. It is mandatory that birders park well off the road and not block any driveways. The bird can be best viewed by approaching no closer than the back of the double garage [walk along the left side of the garage] where it can be viewed at the feeder on the RIGHT side of the house. Directions: From Picton, take Highway 33 for about 10 km to almost the Glenora Ferry, then turn onto County Road 7 and follow to Lake-on-the-Mountain and a further 17 km to Prinyer's Cove Crescent (right on a corner). Babylon Road is off County Road 13 which on the way to Prince Edward Point at the southeast part of the county. To reach the Napanee Landfill Site, exit off the 401 at exit 570. Drive north and take the first right (Beachwood Road). The Landfill Site is just on your left. Permission is needed to bird from the parking lot behind the first building. Amherst Island is located 16 km. west of Kingston. Exit off the 401 at exit 593 and drive south to the very end. Turn right on hwy. 33 and drive 300 m. until you see the sign to the ferry. The ferry leaves the mainland on the half hour and leaves the island on the hour. Cost is $5.00 round trip. There are no gas stations on the island. There are restrooms on the ferry, but not on the island. The K.F.N. property is at the easternmost part of the island. The Owl Woods is at the midway point of the seasonal road located 3.4 km. east from the general store. Good Birding Bruce Ripley "Bruce Ripley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
