The bitterly cold weather of late has not been conducive to remaining in one
spot for very long. Hence it is great when a) a roadside viewing from the
car enables you to see 20 or more Horned Larks running, flying and
singing -- northwest corner of Columbus Rd. and Ashburn Roads in Whitby
(from hy.7 1 concession east of Brock St.-hy.12, then north to the first
sideroad); b) 20 or more Robins perched in roadside trees, feeding on
Buckthorn berries, along Westney Rd. north of Pickering's east-west
Concession 7, while overhead floated a Rough-legged Hawk, and c) the laneway
and feeders at the Pegg residence, at the southwest corner of Concession 7
and Westney, yielded many birds, including a Rusty Blackbird, White-throated
Sparrow, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Downy Woodpeckers, a female Purple Finch and
a pinkish-sided Junco.
