At 5:30 this evening we found an adult male Wood Duck in the water beside the old Velduis Greenhouse. A great winter list bird, it's kind of tame, coming to the edge of the water with the mallards, black ducks and trumpeter swans to get fed by all the people who feed these birds (stale bread!). I have never been this close to a wood duck! Great photo op.... (No, I did not feed the birds) There was also a great blue heron but the wood duck was way more exciting.
Directions: from the 403 in Hamilton, take the main st west exit, go left (west). Go right on Cotes Dr. just past McMaster Hospital. Go right on Olympic dr. (at the lights), then take your first left. You will see the water on your left. The Dundas Marsh is immediately downstream, across Olympic Drive, where Mike Street found the Blue Winged Teal today. The Teal may have relocated close by by the time we got there, but it was getting too dark for us to take a wider look. Good Birding!
