Hi everyone,
Just an update for the St. Clair River. Two first winter WHITE-WINGED
SCOTERS are at Fawn Island. I first observed these two birds on December
25. Scoters are rare for the main part of the river. At the south end of
Port Lambton was a SNOW GOOSE (blue morph) with Canada Geese off Brander
Park. This goose had previously been hanging about at points farther north
on the river. There was also a blue morph Snow Goose in Sarnia Harbour
today. Snow Geese are also rare for the river.
Ducks have been scarce on the river the last couple of winters, unlike the
"old days" of real winters. Mallards are the most numerous with over 500
from Walpole Island to Sarnia, and over 500 in the Sarnia/Port Huron area.
Good numbers of Common Goldeneye with over 300 today. Other species of
ducks are scattered throughout the river. TUNDRA SWANS number about 15
north of Sombra.
The vast majority of gulls previously reported have left for parts unknown.
There are still some GLAUCOUS with about 20 in the river, nine being at
Sarnia Bay.

Directions to Sombra and St. Clair River: Find Hwy 40 which runs N/S
between Sarnia and Wallaceburg. Turn west on Lambton Rd. 2 (Bentpath Line)
and take to
Sombra on the river. Sombra Bay is right in front of you. Fawn Island is
just to the south of the village. The St. Clair Parkway (Rd. 33) follows
the river along its length.

Blake.
