Today, Jan 4/03, Terrie Smith, Tony Bigg, Anne Anthony, Clayton Vardy and I birded LaSalle Park to Niagara Falls.
A total of 73 species were recorded including: LaSalle Park: all 3 mergansers, the Yellow-breasted Chat [8:30 a.m. near the cluster of three benches], several coots, 2 Tundra Swans, N. Mockingbird, Northern Flicker, 2 Ring-necked Ducks and about 12 Trumpeter Swans. "LaSalle Park can be found by exiting the 403 at Waterdown Rd.Burlington and heading South to the Bay." Trail leads from boat ramp and goes east along the shore. Pier 25: hundreds of Ruddy Ducks [perhaps as many as 500] and 7 Double-crested Cormorants. Exit off Eastport Drive on Pier 26 road. Redhill Creek: Northern Shovelers, Great Blue Heron, several Green-winged Teal, and one cormorant. Located on Eastport Drive east of Pier 26. Gray's Road, Stoney Creek: c. 25 W.W.Scoter, 4 Surf Scoter, and 4 Black Scoters. Fort Erie: 2 Horned Grebes and a Lesser Black-backed Gull. Chippewa: Red-bellied Woodpecker Dufferin Island: Carolina Wren and Brown Creeper. Niagara Falls gorge: Pied-billed Grebe and Common Loon. Adam Beck: Thayer's Gull [1A], Iceland Gull [2 AJ]. "Kumlien's" Gull [1A], Glaucous Gull [2 AJ] and Great Blue Heron. Queenston: Winter Wren NOTL: White-crowned Sparrow [4] St' Kits: Horned Lark [4] Not a bad day - nice weather and good company.
