There is an adult gray phase Gyrfalcon wintering in Thunder Bay, it is quite large, probably a female. It is seen along the waterfront around the grain elevators.
we also have a reliable male Eastern Towhee at a rural feeder which has been present for several weeks; and a pair of Northern Cardinals in town. highlights of our CBC's were a sweep of mimids (one each of Brown thrasher, N. Mockingbird and Catbird) and a pair of Cardinals at Marathon; and single Meadowlarks on the Ignace and Thunder Bay counts, both were silent so we couldn't confirm the species. The Nipigon count had a very late Belted Kingfisher. Owls are very scarce, we have only one Hawk Owl, no reliable Great Grays, and no Boreals or Snowys. the most common finches in Thunder Bay this winter are the ones that usually go south for the winter: Purple Finch and Am. Goldfinch. Pine Grosbeaks and redpolls are absent from town but are abundant a couple of hours drive to the north.
