To contact the Science Museum, call 896-5200. Highlights of reports received December 26 through January 2 from the Niagara Frontier Region include EARED GREBES and Christmas Count reports. On Lake Erie, December 26, 2 EARED GREBES were reported at the south end of Dunkirk Harbor. Also in the harbor, 20 HORNED GREBES, 2 TRUMPETER SWANS, 5 TUNDRA SWANS and a RICHARDSON'S CANADA GOOSE. The Niagara Falls Ontario and New York Christmas Bird Count on December 28 recorded 100 species, plus two additional species during the count week. The count territory is centered on the Brock Memorial in Queenston, Ontario. Highlights included a PEREGRINE FALCON in the falls gorge, CALIFORNIA GULL at the Beck Overlook, BLACK-HEADED GULL at Queenston, and in the Town of Porter, a female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE flying past Dietz Road at Lake Ontario and a PINE WARBLER in the woods at Fort Niagara State Park. During the count week, GRAY CATBIRD at Church and McNab Roads in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and 3 PINE GROSBEAKS at the US side of the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge. Other highlights were record high counts of 81 GADWALLS, 1225 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 2977 COMMON MERGANSERS, 8 SHARP-SH. HAWKS, 16 COOPER'S HAWKS, 16 ICELAND GULLS, 2565 AMERICAN ROBINS, 927 DARK-EYED JUNCOS and 406 AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES. Record lows were noted for BONAPARTE'S GULLS, GREAT BLACK-B. GULLS, AMERICAN CROWS and BLACK-CAP. CHICKADEES. A report from the Oak Orchard Wildlife Management Area Christmas Count included 43 species. Highlights were 13 EASTERN SCREECH-OWLS, 4 SHORT-EARED OWLS on Posson Road, 2 YELLOW-B. SAPSUCKERS and GRAY CATBIRD on Albion Road, and YELLOW-R. WARBLER and CHIPPING SPARROW at Johnson and Burns Roads. Other reports this week - SNOWY OWL and a SURF SCOTER at the Peace Bridge in Buffalo. 6 SHORT-EARED OWLS and at least 3 NORTHERN HARRIERS at Route 425 and Ide Road in Wilson. Two EASTERN SCREECH-OWLS were seen flying from tree to tree along Getzville Road near Sheridan Drive in Amherst. And at Buckhorn Island State Park on Grand Island, BROWN CREEPER, CAROLINA WREN, 3 GOLDEN-CR. KINGLETS and several WHITE-THR. SPARROWS. Dial-a-Bird will be updated Thursday evening, January 9.
