I would not suggest turning down the TTL's a week ahead of time. This will only increase traffic and really isn't necessary. Besides what do you gain from it? Proper planning is the key here. It is as simple as 1,2,3. 1. Setup your new Master server and start it 2. Make the old Master a slave to the new master (so any updates are not missed) and changer the slaves to point to the new master. 3. Make your changes at your register to point to the new server Most register say it can take up to 72 hours for the changes to propagate. Make sure you have query logging turned ON on the old master. After a few days, maybe sooner, you will see that there are no more queries coming to the server and it will be safe to shut it down.
